A lot of dubs just baffle me, a couple of years ago watched Crocodile Dundee dubbed in Korean and remember thinking What the hell did I just watch It surely wasnt Crocodile Dundee.I like the American voice acting in the dubbed KIKIS DELIVERY SERVICE (Kirsten Dunst, Debbie Reynolds, Phil Hartman, etc.) and the music is better, too.I also like the voices used in the SPIRITED AWAY dub very much.I havent heard the original Japanese version of TOTORO but Im perfectly satisfied with the dub for that, too.
I go to the message boards for these films on IMDb and find all the hyper-obsessive pro-subanti-dub hysteria to be way overdone. Id only do the dubbed anything if it was the only thing available at the time. Whoa, is that hard to do How long did it take you Can you read stuff like hiraganakatakana too How did you do it. I grew up with My Neighbor Totoro and Kikis Delivery Service on VHS with the original English dubs and didnt realize they were Japanese movies until years later. Once I decided to see more Ghibli movies, I was just used to the dubs because that was what I grew up with and didnt want to change. If I ever get really into anime Ill probably start doing the subs though. I was only joking by repeating what woooo said, but with dubs. Theres at least 2 or 3 Ghibli movies where I prefer the dub over sub, but really Disney usually does a pretty good job where theyre not painful to watch. I know youve already watched the movie, but to anyone who hasnt witnessed Spirited Away, one of the greatest films of all time: just watch the English dub. The Japanese track may be original because it was recorded first, but its still a dub, no more artificial than a foreign language dub. Anime snobs always love to tout the authenticity of Japanese dubs over anything else, but unless you speak Japanese fluently, how are you to judge the quality of the Japanese voice actors If you cant speak Japanese, then you have no idea what constitutes good voice acting; you cant judge expression, tone, elocution, and worse still, you cant even judge content, because youre reading a translation at the bottom of the screen, which is what English dubbing resolves in the first place. And at the end of the day you barely notice whether the dialogue matches up or not, but the difference in acting quality is very noticeable. I watched the first few minutes switching between dubs and subs to find out what I preferred and it was an easy decision, although Im probably going to try the English version next time. ![]() Its unquestionable that the standard of japanese voice acting is far higher than american or european voice acting. ![]()
